How did you start the company?

Scentballz was started in December 2014 with our first field test of our polymer infused scent. I had the idea from my  lack of happiness with the liquid scent options on the market at that time.

What do your customers say about your products?

For being such a new company our reviews are still growing and as we grow our customer base is gaining ground. Our customers seem to like the option for a longer lasting and easier to use scent. Hunters are tired of getting scent on them and wasteful sprays.

 

What are your most popular products and who is your target audience?

 
So for 2016 our top seller was our wild apple scent followed up by our doe with estrus scents. We feel that our customers have found a great attractant power in food based scents.
 
 
We feel that our target group of hunter are just that, HUNTERS. With our products we are geared toward whitetail deer, bears, pigs and even down to raccoons.

 

What do you enjoy most about what you do?

The really cool thing about owning a scent company is I come into contact with a lot of people. What is the fulfilling part of this is hearing people’s success stories. I love to hear how Scentballz is able to help hunters excel in the field.

What is your favorite hunting or fishing memory?

So I’ve had a ton of successes both while hunting and fishing that really stick out in my mind that mean just alittle more to me. So in hunting it’s a tie between the first 10 pt. I got and my first turkey. Both were very special and to get those animals I couldn’t have been more excited. A huge fishing goal of mine was when I caught my first musky. Such a hard fish to land and they come so far and few between.

How did you start the company?

The company started back in 2013 when myself and one of the former founders of the company began discussing ideas on how to get into the market.  I had the original prototype sitting in the garage collecting dust, so we decided to make a go at it.  It was right in the beginning before we even really had anything on paper that our third partner came aboard.  

What do your customers say about your products?

Our customers, are constantly telling us that we have the most innovative outdoor decoy they have every used. More importantly our customers are telling us that they are harvesting birds with it and that without the Fan, they would not have been able to.

What are your most popular products and who is your target audience?

Right now we only have one version of the Fan. 

Our target audience is all turkey hunters.  As the fanning method of hunting grows in popularity, we would love to see every turkey hunter with a fan in their hunting gear.  The fan is designed for any style of turkey hunting.  We have found that people who want the heart pounding, up front and personal encounters with birds are the most receptive to trying our product.

What do you enjoy most about what you do?

I enjoy the fact that we are and have created something from the ground up, that people love and want.  The idea that I am in the outdoor community, starting to make an impact while in charge of my own destiny.

What is your favorite hunting or fishing memory?

My favorite memory to date is from this past deer season.  I had an opportunity to purse one specific deer and was fortunate enough to harvest this particular deer on film, with my business partner.  What started out as a fantastic hunt, ended up being an extraordinary experience that I ultimately got to share with my friends and family.  Read about it on our blog site, The One.

Doughty Enterprises Banner

How did you start the company?

Doughty Enterprises originally began with my father. He has been a life long firearms enthusiast and hunter. He spent time in the Army during Vietnam, next as a Sheriffs Deputy, then custom leather holster maker. The entire time he consistently maintained the practice of casting and reloading lead bullets. This brought him to procuring mills and lathes to make his own bullet molds for cast bullets. The machining process and experience eventually lead to the founding of Doughty Enterprises, where he was manufacturing cast bullet sizing dies and Model 94 Take Down kits. I began learning the machining process from my father towards the end of my military career. My father and I began to set up a plan to transition the business over to me upon my departure from the Army and for his retirement. Once I got out I officially started M. Doughty Enterprises and moved to a new location. Currently we are still organizing and working out the problems with setting up equipment in a new location. Additionally, we are modifying and adding equipment for increased production and efficiency based off lessons learned while at my fathers shop. While my father is officially retired, I am lucky to have him visit the shop twice a week to teach me about both machining and firearms.

What do your customers say about your products?

From the feedback we’ve recieved from customers they are very pleased with our products. The quality of tolerance and overall finish of our product being the highlights. I’m a small one man shop so quality is an asset I have in abundance over speed of manufacturing. With this customers have been pleased with the quality and consideration given to each product order and I hope to continue that trend.

What are your most popular products and who is your target audience?

Up until recently the most popular product has been the custom cast bullet sizing dies. With my father we were striving to achieve a tolerance of +/- .0003″ for a perfect hole. A very time consuming process with our equipment but the results were extremely popular especially amongst the competition air gunner crowd.  Recently though we have introduced Chill Shots, a solid stainless steel “bullet” meant to replace ice in your drink. It is popular among whiskey enthusiast because the Chill Shot doesn’t water down the beverage as it warms up. There are many types of chillers available but the Chill Shots popularity comes from our ability to make a product realistically similar to an actual cartridge such as a 30-30 Winchester. Our customers are really enjoying that they can enjoy their favorite beverage which is chilled by their favorite cartridge.

Our target audience is firearms and outdoors enthusiast. The Chill Shot though, can be enjoyed by movie lovers, history lovers, or anyone that has a cartridge which stands out or represents something special to them. As long as individuals are looking for a quality hand finished product to keep their drinks chilled, then we hope to meet their needs.

What do you enjoy most about what you do?

When I was contemplating leaving the Army to start a new career there was much discussion with my family to include my wife and two boys. During these conversations I came to conclusion that the most important aspect of my life was raising my two boys. This is what lead me to start a small business. As a small business owner I can now ensure that I have time for raising my boys properly. I now have the freedom to always make time for them. With this freedom I can guide them to the outdoors, hunting and fishing, and growing into the young men of the future. While a great product is number one priority for my business list, having time for my children is top priority overall and will always remain there.

What is your favorite hunting or fishing memory?

There are so many great memories that it is hard to pick a single one. I’m sure this is a common problem amongst all outdoorsman. I think I can narrow it down though. I would say my most memorable moment was when my oldest son caught a large rainbow trout on his Spiderman fishing pole. He was only 5 years old if I recall. He was using a shiny silver lure that my father had in his tackle. It was such a fun moment because he made the cast all on his own to follow with reeling the lure back in. When the fish struck he was so surprised. We told him to pop the rod and set the lure. He did a great job to which he followed up by reeling the fish in! He caught the first fish, the largest fish, and the best fish of the day. That night he ate the entire fish. To this day he loves fishing and he loves eating his catch even more.

Be the Tree

How did you start the company?

Be the Tree came about in 2014 after I had begun experimenting with different natural scents. Some friends had made comments that I should make a common scent to use in all hunting scenarios. After we had a few final scent formulas, we started testing. I would not allow this product to be just another gimmick to make money. After extensive behavioral testing with excellent results, we had decided to do first person single subject testing. Basically putting a hunter into a real life scenario. The results ended with multiple deer going about their everyday rigors without any intentions of us being thereat as close as 5 feet for several minutes. Thus Be The Tree llc. was born.

What do your customers say about your products?

As any hunter knows, new products are always looked at with a dash of skepticism. When the real magic happens, is when our customers get the products in their hands for the first time. They immediately understand by smelling it that this will be their secret weapon. From then on they vow their lifelong loyalty to our product. They finally feel a comfort knowing that a wind direction isn’t an issue.

What are your most popular products and who is your target audience?

 Our most popular products are our Cover Scent Field Spray and Refill, Shower gel, rechargeable Scent wafers and Lotion.

Our targeted focus is to any outdoor enthusiast. Man, woman or child, whether they hunt, fish camp or just love watching wildlife, we want to reach out to them all.

What do you enjoy most about what you do?

The biggest joy of all of this to me is the mass outpouring of people who our product has helped to make a memory, from the beginner shooting their first game animal or the advanced hunter securing that trophy of a lifetime. 

What is your favorite hunting or fishing memory?

My favorite memory would be when I was 12 years old and was able to shoot my first deer with a rifle my father had used to hunt before it was passed on to me.
