How did you start the company?

The company started back in 2013 when myself and one of the former founders of the company began discussing ideas on how to get into the market.  I had the original prototype sitting in the garage collecting dust, so we decided to make a go at it.  It was right in the beginning before we even really had anything on paper that our third partner came aboard.

What do your customers say about your products?

Our customers, are constantly telling us that we have the most innovative outdoor decoy they have every used. More importantly our customers are telling us that they are harvesting birds with it and that without the Fan, they would not have been able to.

What are your most popular products and who is your target audience?

Right now we only have one version of the Fan.

Our target audience is all turkey hunters.  As the fanning method of hunting grows in popularity, we would love to see every turkey hunter with a fan in their hunting gear.  The fan is designed for any style of turkey hunting.  We have found that people who want the heart pounding, up front and personal encounters with birds are the most receptive to trying our product.

What do you enjoy most about what you do?

I enjoy the fact that we are and have created something from the ground up, that people love and want.  The idea that I am in the outdoor community, starting to make an impact while in charge of my own destiny.

What is your favorite hunting or fishing memory?

My favorite memory to date is from this past deer season.  I had an opportunity to purse one specific deer and was fortunate enough to harvest this particular deer on film, with my business partner.  What started out as a fantastic hunt, ended up being an extraordinary experience that I ultimately got to share with my friends and family.  Read about it on our blog site, The One.

Comments from Wisconsin Outdoor Pursuits:

The Turkey Fan is a very unique and innovative product that may allow you to make a sneak on that stubborn Tom that is hanging out in the middle of the field.  Based on some of the footage, the Turkey Fan will definitely add some excitement to your hunt!

How did you start the company?

I started Mike’s Turkey Talkers through my passion and love for the outdoors and turkey hunting. I really hate the off season when we are not able to hunt and I wanted to stay in the outdoors all year long so to speak.  Little did I know a turkey hunting seminar was the final piece of the puzzle. Later on I created Mikes Turkey Talkers. At the seminar they were showing all these production strikers and potcalls and I was interested in carving them. When I left I said I can carve those and so I did.  I started carving strikers only by knife. I didn’t use power tools for the first 2 years. I started Mikes Turkey Talkers with a cell phone and a knife in a 2 bedroom apartment. Rough but I did it, I started up a Facebook page and eventually started to sell them and soon made a huge impact. Two years into call making I entered the NWTF grand nationals in Nashville.  The first time ever showing or competeting in any event and I took a 6th place medal. It’s the largest event of its kind in the world.  Since then my business has grown and I have come up with a few of my own designs of strikers.  I am now into a workshop with all the tools I need. Fully equipped, I now offer lathe/turned strikers and yes I still hand carve some.  I try to do both on every striker. I will be competing again next year at the nationals.  To date, I have carved and turned over 500 strikers. I also offer personalized strikers.  I also created a split tip striker.  I do a few hand carved spurs that I incorporate into the call as well as wild turkey leg bands. I do a few potcalls as wellI even started doing crotchet hooks for the lady’s!

What do your customers say about your products?

“By far the best sounding striker that I have in my arsenal. The yelps and purrs are so sweet sounding I know the gobblers will not be able to resist.”

What do you enjoy most about what you do?

I enjoy the success I bring to my customers the most and it keeps me in the outdoors.  As I always say, you will never here me brag about my strikers, I just let the strikers do the talking. I have machines, but I still do a lot of my work by hand.  I hand sand, polish and burnish my strikers. I can spend anywhere from 6 to 12 hours on a striker depending on wood type and if it’s all carved or turned. It’s not money that drives this business, it’s my passion and love of turkey hunting.  My payment is getting success photos of customers using my calls to make great turkey hunting memories!

What is your favorite hunting or fishing memory?

My best hunting memories  started 5 years ago when I introduced my son Hunter into hunting deer and turkeys.  It’s not just one favorite, they are all my favorite!  To date I’ve shared 5 years of hunting with my son. He has taken five deer and 3 turkeys all in only a total of 16 hours of actual hunting, tie-in 35 years in the outdoors the last five years are the best!

How did you start the company?

After the 2011 turkey season, I decided that I wanted to try to make calls for myself.  I wanted to know what I was getting and wanted to get the sounds that I liked and needed for the woods.  At some point along that process, I bought a cheap call maker and was able to make a few that I liked.  I decided to invest in more of a profession style of call press, at this point Strut Buster was born!

I have been in business since 2011

What do you enjoy most about what you do?

A couple of things, I enjoy sharing my experience of the outdoors with other outdoorsmen.  I like hearing stories of other hunters who have been successful while using Strut Buster calls.  Like hearing about hunters being able to call in and harvest their first bird while using our calls!

Our top selling calls are the Swamp Fox & Red Neck.  We are very excited about our new calls in 2015 which are the Wildcat, Tom Bomb and the newly reworked Bird Dog.  We are thrilled to be introducing Pillow Talk, which is Strut Busters first ever pot call this month.  The pot call series was brought to the table by Pro Staff member Dallas Pruitt.

What is your favorite hunting or fishing memory?

My favorite hunting memory is when my dad went turkey hunting with me for the very first time.  We got on a couple that were some of the most vocal birds I had heard that season.  They would double and triple gobble at every call!!  What was awesome was that all those sounding birds surrounded my dad.  I backed up behind him.  From any direction, one could end up in his lap.  We had a hen nearby that was attempting to pull those gobblers away from my sweet talk calling.  She yelped and cut, doing all she could to lure those long beards away from us.  So I turned up my calling and got really aggressive.  I used a sequence of cutting and cackling.  They finally started working their way back towards us and ended up in dads lap. They definitely put on a show. The birds came out 20 yards from my dad.  The only problem was that they were between me and my dad.  He couldnt get a shot off because he would have been shooting in my direction.  While we didnt get a bird that day, it was the most excited I had seen my dad in a long time.  Im so grateful to have been able to share that experience with my father!  Even though he didnt kill a turkey it was a hunt of a lifetime. You can read the full story in a chapter called Dad in my book Answer the Call Wit, Wisdom and the Wild Turkey by Geoff Burden.

SRB Field Rests

By Steve Wall

How did you start the company?

SRB Field Rests started in a muddy goose field in 2008. I needed a dry clean place to lay my gun besides on my old carpet and pillow. I finally found some forked branches and used them. While waiting for the geese I got to looking at the branches and thought maybe this would be a handy idea for a rest. When I got back that night I started drawing and came up with an idea for the rests. After searching for a molder to make some prototypes for 2 to 3 months I found one that would work for me. We got the molds and poured several heads then I found some PVC rods for the posts and glued them together to make the rests. These were very blocky and a little heavy. After a few shows and a trip to SHOT SHOW with a good friend, I decided there was enough interest to go to injection molding.  After about $30,000, I had a mold and some product to show. Then Packaging! I got a company that makes cardboard packaging to make a flat cardboard and had a design printed on it and had to tie the rests and sockets on that with twist ties. People kept telling me to get clamshell packaging so I went on the hunt again and had clamshells and the inserts made. That is where we are now, still working on getting them into the retail stores and to the people. We have built a great team of Pro Staff that have helped promote the rests but it is a brand new concept and people still do not realize what they can do for the average hunter. Keep yours weapons safe, clean and ready while hunting the fields, popup blinds, layout blinds, marshes, tree stands or even in the boat. I also received a patent on the rests in May of 2010.
