How did you start the company?

Jody Simpson, our husbands, and I (Kathryn Brown) were goose hunting in Stuttgart, Arkansas with our families and friends.  We were very uncomfortable in our clothes, for the 999th time because the clothes we wore were our husband’s old clothes. We tried going to several stores to find some women’s camo but there was not a large selection and it was all the same old leaf and stick patterns.  We went to eat BBQ in Texarkana and we were discussing our dilemma.  Our husbands got fed up with the fashion talk and told us, if we were so unhappy, make our own! They were geniuses! The conversation quickly flipped to creating our own line of hunting clothes that would be fashionable and comfortable for women specifically.  We knew that we could make camo out of any shape because it’s all about color and contrast.  It was like a bolt of lightning hit Jody and I at the same time because we both looked at each other and screamed “HIGH HEELS!” The men shushed us, but it was too late, High Heel Huntress was born.  With the help of an artistic husband, we drew out the first ideas on a bar napkin.

What do your customers say about your products?

They are very comfortable.  They are versatile.  The pants come up high enough to hold you in but not so high that you are suffocating.  Husbands say that the pants make us look very skinny. Our customers love the fact that our clothing is Made in America!

What are your most popular products and who is your target audience?

Our mid-weight hunting jacket and our base layers are very popular.  We also have studded tops that are a favorite.

Our target audience is athletic and outdoorsy women who want to be stylish and comfortable.

What do you enjoy most about what you do?

Empowering women to embrace an outdoorsy lifestyle and feel feminine and comfortable.  We have a lot of fun. We love the outdoors, so getting to head out into the woods or to the lake to fish is second nature to us.  We want more women to be as happy and comfortable as we are!

What is your favorite hunting or fishing memory?

I went along with my husband on his New Zealand  hunting trip with Paul Bamber, our good friend and owner of Wanganui Safaris. To my surprise, Paul offered me an opportunity to shoot a red stag.  New Zealand  looks like a storybook with its lush green mountains, but they are very steep.  After a half day of hiking and scouting I got my opportunity to shoot.  I had not ever shot more than 150-200 hundred yards so I was nervous to shoot from one mountain to another.  I made a 370 yard shot!  It was an amazing experience.  The stag was beautiful and had exceptional crowns that looked like champagne flutes.  ~Jody Simpson

Comments from Wisconsin Outdoor Pursuits:

With the growing number of female hunters, the hunting community as a whole needs to make sure that these women feel comfortable and happy to be a part of this great sport that we all love!  High Heel Huntress is doing a great job of making clothing that looks good, is practical and that women feel comfortable wearing! Keep up the great work ladies!

How did you start the company?

After the 2011 turkey season, I decided that I wanted to try to make calls for myself.  I wanted to know what I was getting and wanted to get the sounds that I liked and needed for the woods.  At some point along that process, I bought a cheap call maker and was able to make a few that I liked.  I decided to invest in more of a profession style of call press, at this point Strut Buster was born!

How long have you been in business?

I have been in business since 2011

What do you enjoy most about what you do?

A couple of things, I enjoy sharing my experience of the outdoors with other outdoorsmen.  I like hearing stories of other hunters who have been successful while using Strut Buster calls.  Like hearing about hunters being able to call in and harvest their first bird while using our calls!

What are your most popular products?

swamp fox

Our top selling calls are the Swamp Fox & Red Neck.  We are very excited about our new calls in 2015 which are the Wildcat, Tom Bomb and the newly reworked Bird Dog.  We are thrilled to be introducing Pillow Talk, which is Strut Busters first ever pot call this month.  The pot call series was brought to the table by Pro Staff member Dallas Pruitt.

Who is your target audience?

Those who are passionate about turkey hunting and those who we hope to introduce to the sport.

What is your favorite hunting or fishing memory?

My favorite hunting memory is when my dad went turkey hunting with me for the very first time.  We got on a couple that were some of the most vocal birds I had heard that season.  They would double and triple gobble at every call!!  What was awesome was that all those sounding birds surrounded my dad.  I backed up behind him.  From any direction, one could end up in his lap.  We had a hen nearby that was attempting to pull those gobblers away from my sweet talk calling.  She yelped and cut, doing all she could to lure those long beards away from us.  So I turned up my calling and got really aggressive.  I used a sequence of cutting and cackling.  They finally started working their way back towards us and ended up in dads lap. They definitely put on a show. The birds came out 20 yards from my dad.  The only problem was that they were between me and my dad.  He couldnt get a shot off because he would have been shooting in my direction.  While we didnt get a bird that day, it was the most excited I had seen my dad in a long time.  Im so grateful to have been able to share that experience with my father!  Even though he didnt kill a turkey it was a hunt of a lifetime. You can read the full story in a chapter called Dad in my book Answer the Call Wit, Wisdom and the Wild Turkey by Geoff Burden.
