Cirrus Outdoors

By Steve Wall

How did you start the company?

Cirrus Outdoors was started much like any other. It started with an idea. My nephew and I used to call each other all the time and start the conversation with “I have an invention.” We would laugh and say, “What is it this time?” I told him that I had an idea that would change a category in the hunting industry and that it was one of the most overlooked categories. The Cirrus™ Wind Indicator was an idea that can truly help a hunter become successful, if the wind is wrong it doesn’t matter what camo you wear or bow you shoot. I thought if we could figure out a way to show the wind direction more effectively than powder, I was going to do that.

I worked on the concept and had a good idea of how it should work and what it should do. My partners came through another project we had been working on and they showed interest in helping engineer, patent and build the Cirrus™ Wind Indicator. We started building models with a 3D printer and custom molds.  We then took the working prototypes to ATA 2016 to get the reaction from buyers and hunters as to what the reception would be for a product like this, the response was overwhelming! We immediately went back to the drawing board and started manufacturing.
We had inventory and started selling direct to consumer in August 2016 and have been gaining distribution with dealers and retailers across the Country.

What do your customers say about your products?

“My cirrus helped me know exactly where the wind was blowing. I was able to connect on this good management buck today here in NJ on opening day of gun.” – Chad Van Orden

“I love how well this thing detects even the slightest wind!  #getcirrus” – Kevin Boyer

The wind here in Africa can change at any moment which can affect our success in a hurry. Our Cirrus Wind Indicator units are a key to keeping track of the wind changes and thermals from the blinds! Comre Safaris” – Brand Scott

You want the best indicator in the business? Look no further cirrus came out with a indicator that doesn’t only check the wind direction but in marginal wind will determine the thermals!! Cirrus Wind Indicator #windindicator #winddirection #thermalsrising” – Jason Brooks

What are your most popular products and who is your target audience?

Cirrus™ Wind Indicator Kit and the Earth Cartridge replacement packs.

All hunters need to know the wind! Golfers, K9 and Sporting dog trainers benefit from understanding wind and thermals that carry scent, HVAC techs use Cirrus to detect air flow in buildings.

What do you enjoy most about what you do?

I enjoy the customers the most. I love hearing from people who use Cirrus and it makes a difference in the way they hunt now. I have had some say they feel like they left their arrows at home if they do not have it, it becomes a tool they rely on all the time. I also love the customers we do not have yet, I like explaining how this works much better than powder, dirt, milkweed, etc…

What is your favorite hunting or fishing memory?

I have some incredible memories growing up hunting and fishing with my Dad and brother. I would say the most memorable hunting experience was watching my Dad shoot a deer in a three-piece suit. Long story but it happened. lol
My most memorable fishing experience was catching my first Blue Marlin with my wife and daughter. It was a dream come true and would not have wanted to experience it without them.

Comments from Wisconsin Outdoor Pursuits:

Want to give yourself the best opportunity to harvest the animal you are after?  One of the most important factors that needs to be consider is wind direction!  No matter how well your scent control measures are, there is still the opportunity to pick up odors that are foreign to the animal that you are pursuing.  Once I came across the Cirrus Wind Indicator from Cirrus Outdoors, I knew that I needed to share this product with you guys!  The cloud like vapor from the Cirrus Wind Indicator makes determining the wind direction and thermals easier than ever!

How did you start the company?

I have had a bow since I was a little kid but in the rural area where we live archery resources were very limited. Years later when I started hunting the bows were heavy with cast risers and steel control cables.  I was working for a machinist and heard about a company who was making archery components for a variety of companies such as Martin, Tenpoint and more.  I applied and started working there within a couple of months. Risers were then starting to be made in CNC machines instead of molds. We were making risers, cams and many other machined archery components. They also had an extrusion line that was producing vanes. I was asked to give the extrusion line a go.

IMG_1043

For the next 8 years I ran the extruded vanes for them, during that time we made vanes of softer materials that had great adhesion properties but lacked stiffness and tore easily.  The company was a bit resistant to change even though a need for a stiffer stronger vanes was there. The urethane I wanted to use required more specialized equipment to process.  Sometime around April of 2002 I left the company.  Wanting to stay in the area with a declining economy ( lack of logging) I teamed up with one of my last employers previous owners and we wrote up a business plan.  Shortly after we started building machinery to produce a stiffer, tougher and more consistent vane. Our process allowed us to process the urethane without any plasticizers or mold release that could affect adhesion.

What do your customers say about your products?

Without a large advertising budget it was hard to convince people of our quality so for the next few years we offered free samples to anyone who requested them. Word of mouth worked well for us.  We are not typical salesmen, the products we wanted to offer were products that we would be proud to have in our quiver.

With 12 sizes , 5 profiles and 13 colors we now have a product for any style of shooting. All made with the same size and weight consistency as the next.  Our customers expect the vanes to be quiet, durable and extremely accurate while keeping weight to a minimum. The efficiency of our process also allows us to keep our prices comparably low.

What are your most popular products and who is your target audience?

Our most popular vane changes almost every year. In the past 4-5” vanes were very popular.  With the stiffer materials now the most popular sizes typically range from 2-3”.  Everything in archery has become more accurate and streamlined to allow these smaller sizes of vanes to achieve the same or better flight than the longer heavier vanes.

IMG_2612

We have vanes for everyone but we really enjoy feedback from the most critical archers, hardcore bowhunters to top level pros. These archers tend to pick apart every aspect of the vane and if we can meet their needs we know that every other archer will be satisfied.

What do you enjoy most about what you do?

I like a lot about what we do here, there is a lot of satisfaction building a product you truly believe in but I have to say our favorite thing is product testing. Our very first prototypes killed an elk before they were sent to any customers. The Urethane 3” I shot was quiet enough for a 75 yard shot on an unsuspecting animal and I was able to use the arrow, vanes included-again.

What is your favorite hunting or fishing memory?

As far as my favorite hunting and fishing memories…Very tough. That is primarily what we do.  Watching the twins shoot their first bear, or land their first salmon would be up there.  Packing a toddler to a downed bull elk and watching their expression as you approached is pretty priceless too.  We are a family run company, all of us are dedicated to archery and the outdoors. This used to be very common throughout the sport, but unfortunately less and less all the time.

Comments from Wisconsin Outdoor Pursuits:

When looking at archery equipment, vanes can sometimes be overlooked as one of the most critical components.  Strong, durable vanes will improve your shooting consistency. If you are interested in some of the best vanes on the market be sure you check out VaneTec!

Advanced Treestands

By Steve Wall

How did you start the company?

I started Advanced “Take-Down” Treestands to combine my passion for bowhunting and the lessons learned from working in engineering and product management roles for Lockheed Martin Missiles and Fire Control over the last 15 years.  It all started when my wife went with me to hang treestands ten years ago, and when I got done she said, “I never knew how dangerous it was for you to be hanging stands.”  The next day she went and ordered me a Hunter Safety System Harness, and I started working on developing a revolutionary system for hanging treestands. That’s how it all began.

What do your customers say about your products?

Once our customers experience the simplicity of hanging our rock solid treestands, they love them.  We’ve heard things like, “I no longer dread hanging or taking down stands thanks to the “Take-Down” technology”,   “I’ve never felt safer in a lockon treestands”, and “ I’ll never use cheap hang on stands again, my family is counting on me to return at the end of the day.”

A001_C110_0308YC

What are your most popular products and who is your target audience?

Our Take-Down i2 and s2 are our most popular.  Now that we have bowhunters from all over the US using our products, they love the idea of purchasing additional stems instead of a complete treestand.  They set multiple stems across their property and then use the same seat and platform at each location.  This deters theft and also keeps your buddies from hunting your spot while you’re at work all week!

A001_C110_0308YC

Our target customer is the hardcore bowhunter who wants the best gear on the market to help maximize their time in the field.  As fellow bowhunters, we understand that your entire season may come down to one opportunity and you need gear that performs.   Furthermore, our families are counting on us to return from the field. When safety in the field is the priority, we have more and more customers looking to Advanced “Take-Down” Treestands.

What do you enjoy most about what you do?

I love being able to take my professional background in mechanical engineering and project management and apply that to a company and product line that contributes to an industry I am passionate about.  Knowing that we have been blessed to take an idea from paper to the marketplace is truly a dream come true.  God has placed some amazing people in my life to keep this journey moving forward, and we are excited to see what the future holds for Advanced “Take-Down” Treestands.

What is your favorite hunting or fishing memory?

I was blessed to be raised in a family who planned Thanksgiving dinner around when the guys would be in from hunting and a father who took me fishing every time he went to the lake.  Now that I too have children, it’s amazing to see them share in the same hunting heritage that I grew up experiencing.  My son just turned six in March so he’s been looking forward to the Arkansas youth season for spring turkey.  Even though he missed his first turkey, it was an experience that I will never forget.  It definitely ranks up there with one of the finest memories I’ve shared in the outdoors.

Comments from Wisconsin Outdoor Pursuits:

Ryan Wheelington, president and founder of Advanced “Take-Down” Treestands has been able to combine his professional knowledge / experience with his passion for hunting!  After reading over Ryan’s answers to the Spotlight questions, I couldn’t help but notice how closely this aligns with the motto here at Wisconsin Outdoor Pursuits. “Share Your Passion, Pursue Your Dreams”  This is exactly what Ryan has been able to do with the Advanced “Take-Down” Treestands!  With two young children myself, I also admire Ryan’s desire to share his love for the outdoors with his children!

Hips Archery Targets

By Steve Wall

How did you start the company?

Hips Archery Targets was started in 1968 by Stanley Hips.  Stanley was a bowhunter, and like many archers, he needed a way to practice more often.  It was later purchased by Darrin Brown, who at the time, was owner of Longhorn Archery Systems, a manufacturer of 3D archery targets.

What do you enjoy most about what you do?

I would say that I like being able to produce a product that helps others enjoy their love for the sport of archery.  Talking with fellow archers and bowhunters throughout the year is a big part of what we do and it never gets old.

What is your favorite hunting or fishing memory?

My favorite memory from the field would have to be the first time my dad and I went bowhunting together, now almost 20 years ago.  It was our first opportunity to take a trophy White Tail Deer and the memories will last a lifetime.  Since then we have been on many adventures and look forward to many more.

Comments from Wisconsin Outdoor Pursuits:

If you shoot your bow on a regular basis you definitely understand the importance of having a good target.  You want a target that is going to: stop your arrows, stand up to the punishment of multiple shots and provide you with the most value for your money.  Well, I believe that the Hips Archery Targets will do all of that and more.  These targets look to be very well constructed and stand up to intense punishment, even from broadheads, as you can see in the video.  I might be in the market for a new target this offseason and I don’t think I have to look much farther than at one of these great targets from Hips Archery Targets.
