How did you start the company?

Scent Kapture started as a conversation at our family Christmas about 2 years ago.  My two brothers and I were telling stories about pheasant hunting in below freezing temperatures in Iowa and days in our 12 foot Loweline boat fishing for crappies with our Dad.  We started brainstorming business ideas about our passion to hunt and fish.  I have been in the liquids business in the professional beauty industry for 15 years and started researching new technology in scent elimination liquids.  We found a proprietary blend of ingredients that encapsulates and eliminates odors on contact and began testing formulas right away.  We have now refined the formulas after feedback from friends and professionals in the field.  Our formulas were all professionally formulated from scratch – with the hunter in mind.  Scentkapture.com went live June 1, 2015.

What do your customers say about your products?

We hear that the products eliminate odors that we did not even test on.  One customer was about to go purchase brand new boots because his 8+ year old hunting boots had a nasty odor to them.  He began treating them with Scent Kapture Field Spray and within days the odor was gone.  Also customers say that we are the ‘first scent eliminator without its own fragrance in the bottle.  We worked very hard to make sure our formulas remain as scent free as possible. We also received a story back about a guy that smoked a cigar in his truck the night before hunting and opened the door the next morning to the ‘worst cigar smell ever.’  He treated the carpets of the truck immediately and within minutes the cigar smell was eliminated!

What are your most popular products?

Scent Kapture Field Spray, Hair and Body Wash, Laundry Detergent, and After the Hunt Hand Scrub.  After the Hunt Super Charged Hand Scrub is a product that I have had in my mind since I was 10 years old.  I was always struggling to get the fish smell off of my hands after a long day of bass fishing in farm ponds in Iowa.  I knew there must be a product out there to eliminate that smell but I never found it so I made it!  It is unique in the fact that it will remove the worst grime from your hands as well as smells from skinning wild game or catching fish all day.

What is your favorite hunting or fishing memory?

It is very tough to not tell the story of my first bow whitetail kill, but this story is the one that really got me hooked on hunting and the great outdoors…

So I would have to say that my most memorable hunting memory was when I was 12 years old.  My dad, his best friend Marcus, my two brothers and myself were hitting one of our rooster pheasant ‘honey holes’ in southwest Iowa.  I had been walking along and shooting at pheasants in Iowa since I was 8 years old.  This day was different – Dolly – our female britney spaniel went on point just over the crest of a hill that no one else could see.  I immediately rushed over to flush the bird as I have many times with brothers and dad in the wings – but this time it was just Dolly and I.  I crept up to where Dolly was locked on point until the rooster pheasant came busting out of the tall grass – I shouldered my Remington 1100 – 20 gauge – took aim – and in one shot – dropped him!  Dolly right on his tail made the perfect retrieve to me this time (instead of Marcus).  Everyone heard the shot and came into sight and the celebration began!  My first solo rooster pheasant.

My favorite fishing memory would have to be the trips that we took with my late father in the Gulf of Mexico.  My two brothers, my dad, and myself would become Larry (professional fisherman for 30 years) crew for 4 days.  We would spend 3 nights in the Gulf of Mexico catching and eating all kinds of fish.  We would catch 80+ lb amber jack, 125 lb Warsaw Grouper, Barracuda, Tuna, you name it.  We caught 32 species one year alone!  It was valuable time together with our Dad doing what we loved in the great outdoors.

Comments from Wisconsin Outdoor Pursuits:

As a bowhunter, I definitely know the importance of being as scent free in the woods as possible.  I do everything possible to give myself the best opportunity to get close to the animal I am hunting.  I really liked the “Simple Steps” page on the Scent Kapture website that detailed different steps that you can take to ensure you are as scent free as possible!  If you are vigilant about reducing your scent in the woods, I can almost guarantee that you will see more deer and have more shot opportunities.

How did you start the company?

When hunting in low light conditions Karl Johnson, founder and CEO of Clearshot Archery had issues locating and seeing the peep.   The color blended into the surroundings making it more than difficult for him.  His father (who is 100% colorblind) also had the same issue, thus the focus on creating a high quality anodized aluminum peep that they both could use.  In doing so they made a peep that many now see the advantages of shooting.

What do you enjoy most about what you do?

I enjoy talking to our customers and explaining why and what it does!

What is your favorite hunting or fishing memory?

I’m not sure its my favorite but its what got us started.  Having a shot at a 6×6 whitetail at 20 yards and both my dad and I not able to see our peeps to take a good safe shoot.  Watching him run off is something I’ll never forget.

Comments from Wisconsin Outdoor Pursuits:

Having experienced peep sight issues myself, I understand the importance good reliable peep sight.  After looking over the Clearshot Archery website, I became intrigued with the 2 tone interchangeable peep.  We all know that we usually don’t have a lot of time when taking a shot on an animal in the wild.  The ability to pick up your sight and target faster may make a huge difference come this fall.  Even though you may not change your peep that often, the ease of choosing a different color or size will allow you to experiment and find the right combination that fits you!  With that being said, I plan on placing an order very soon for an interchangeable peep and can’t wait to start shooting with it!

How did you start the company?

CamLockBox started out as a hobby that got out of control.  I bought a laser for cutting steel and wasn’t sure what I was going to do with it.  I knew of game cameras and the boxes that were available for locking them up and I knew I could improve greatly on what was available.  I started working out of my garage on the boxes with spare time while working full time at Fox Valley Metal Tech.  After roughly four years, the boxes got so out of control I decided to work on them full time instead.  We now work out of two buildings, stock around 60 different trail cameras, and have security boxes for several hundred camera models (among MANY other items).

How long have you been in business?

We’ve been manufacturing our security boxes for around 10 years, I’m not completely sure since it started out so slow.

Moultrie M-550 M880i M990i Gen2 Security Box-1

Who is your target audience?

We’re after anyone who loves to hunt or fish!  We’re best known for our cameras and security boxes but we’re also just getting into stocking common fishing accessories.  We also come across a lot of customers calling from government agencies like the DNR and US boarder patrol.

What do you enjoy most about what you do?

I like building relationships with all types of customers.  We get a lot of repeat customers and I think that’s because we take the time to talk to them and figure out with them what is the best trail camera for them or the best way to secure the cameras they already have.  I also really like to see pictures that customers send to us…we get photos of things they didn’t even know existed!Blade_X_5_MP_Security_Box_1__17712_1409809691_1280_1280

What are your most popular products?

Our most popular products are definitely our security/bear boxes.  All of them are designed by us and 100% made here in Green Bay, Wisconsin.  We also sell a ton of Master Lock products (python cables and padlocks) and our top selling cameras are made by Moultrie.

What is your favorite hunting or fishing memory?

I don’t have one specific hunting or fishing memory but I can say I’m proud of the number of quality deer I’ve harvested over the years.

Comments from Wisconsin Outdoor Pursuits:

Having a camera batted around and chewed on a few times by a bear last fall, A CAMLOCKbox would have been very helpful!  Along with protecting your camera from unwanted animals, it also provides a great way of locking your camera to the tree.  Not all cameras are set up the best for locking them to a tree.  Hunting public land here in Wisconsin, the need to lock my camera is evident!  The CAMLOCKbox provides a great way to do that!  I will definitely be looking at picking up a box myself to be able to better lock and mount my trail camera this year!  I encourage you to do the same!

Why do you hunt?  Hunting has been around as long as humans have!  This tradition has stemmed from our necessity to provide food for our families.  I started thinking about this question this past weekend while I was out turkey hunting.  It was a tough weekend and the Toms were not very responsive.  However, some of the other experiences I encountered on this hunt gave me the inspiration to share with you why I hunt and get you thinking about why you hunt!

DSC_0019

When answering the question “Why do you hunt”, I need to start by saying, to me hunting is not always about the kill!   Sure, a kill is the end goal, but the drive behind why I hunt is much more!  For starters, a big reason why I hunt is the experience.  Everything from the preparation to the processing of the animal.  I truly enjoy learning about the animal I am trying to harvest and what it takes to be successful.  Harvesting an animal is no easy task.  We are entering their environment where they are familiar with their surroundings.  I love watching and learning why an animal acts a particular way.  I love learning from my past experiences to make myself a better hunter.

DSC_0004

Another big reason that I hunt is for all of the unique sights and sounds we experience while in the woods.  This may be something unique that the animal I am pursuing does or it could be seeing an animal that I don’t normally see.  Last year, I pictured a black bear in the area where I deer hunt.  Even though I had heard other people talk about bears in the area, I had never had any experiences with them myself.  I had the pleasure of watching a fisher sneak past my treestand this past archery season.  This spring I was able to watch a Tom turkey court and mount a hen out in the field, a sight I had never been able to experience before.  My dad and I also spotted a hen sitting on her nest down in a ditch as we walked back to the truck for lunch.  You never know what you will see or experience while out hunting!

DSC_0008

Last and maybe the biggest reason I hunt is sharing these experiences with family and friends!  I grew up following my dad into the woods on many adventures.  From sitting with my dad before I was able to hunt myself to hunting spring turkeys with him to this day, to me these experiences are what it is all about.  Memories like my dad calling in my first turkey and seeing him shaking more than I was as the turkey got closer!  To now, as I have shared before, taking my children hunting and sharing the outdoors with them!  I look forward to turkey hunting every spring because I know that it usually means a day or two of walking in the woods with my dad!  While I will always cherish the hunts with my dad the most, I also have great memories of hunting small game with my friends growing up!  From jumping on brush piles chasing rabbits, to searching the trees for squirrels!  In more recent years, I have been able to share hunting adventures with new friends and my wife’s family.  These are all experiences that truly make hunting what it is for me!

So as you are finishing reading this, think about “Why do you hunt.”  What is it that keeps giving you that itch to get in the woods?  I am sure that for many of you, like me, it is not all about the kill.  I would love to hear from you about why you hunt and what keeps bringing you back!  Send me an email or comment below!  Let’s share our passion for the outdoors!
