How did you start the company?

Cirrus Outdoors was started much like any other. It started with an idea. My nephew and I used to call each other all the time and start the conversation with “I have an invention.” We would laugh and say, “What is it this time?” I told him that I had an idea that would change a category in the hunting industry and that it was one of the most overlooked categories. The Cirrus™ Wind Indicator was an idea that can truly help a hunter become successful, if the wind is wrong it doesn’t matter what camo you wear or bow you shoot. I thought if we could figure out a way to show the wind direction more effectively than powder, I was going to do that.
 
I worked on the concept and had a good idea of how it should work and what it should do. My partners came through another project we had been working on and they showed interest in helping engineer, patent and build the Cirrus™ Wind Indicator. We started building models with a 3D printer and custom molds.  We then took the working prototypes to ATA 2016 to get the reaction from buyers and hunters as to what the reception would be for a product like this, the response was overwhelming! We immediately went back to the drawing board and started manufacturing.
We had inventory and started selling direct to consumer in August 2016 and have been gaining distribution with dealers and retailers across the Country.

All hunters need to know the wind! Golfers, K9 and Sporting dog trainers benefit from understanding wind and thermals that carry scent, HVAC techs use Cirrus to detect air flow in buildings.

 

What do you enjoy most about what you do?

I enjoy the customers the most. I love hearing from people who use Cirrus and it makes a difference in the way they hunt now. I have had some say they feel like they left their arrows at home if they do not have it, it becomes a tool they rely on all the time. I also love the customers we do not have yet, I like explaining how this works much better than powder, dirt, milkweed, etc…

 

 

What is your favorite hunting or fishing memory?

I have some incredible memories growing up hunting and fishing with my Dad and brother. I would say the most memorable hunting experience was watching my Dad shoot a deer in a three-piece suit. Long story but it happened. lol
My most memorable fishing experience was catching my first Blue Marlin with my wife and daughter. It was a dream come true and would not have wanted to experience it without them.

How did you start the company?

I came up with the idea for BoneView during a late season Wisconsin bow hunt in 2014.  It was late December, a fair amount of snow blanketed the ground and a cold wind had been blowing for a number of days.  It was clear the deer were only moving to feed, and the limited food sources on our farm near Strum WI were covered with track.  We have 3 main food sources and I had positioned a trail cam and tree stand over each food source.  As I left my truck, my mind was torn on which stand to hunt.  The prevailing west wind was great for any of the 3 stands.  The information I really wanted was on those trail cameras, but I had no way to access it in the field.  I decided to hunt the furthest of the three stands, so I could collect the SD cards from the other two cameras on my way in or out and then check the cards when I returned home later that evening.  I ended up pulling all three SD cards on my way into the stand.  I then sat for the next 3 hours wondering what was on those cards in my pocket – Had I picked the most active stand? Was the big guy we had seen before gun season still on his feet? Were any bucks moving during daylight hours?  It was then I decided there had to be a way to view SD cards on the smartphone I always carried with me.  After a few months of research and product development I had a working prototype.  I then called on a good friend, Steve, to help me get started on marketing and sales.  Steve was the leader in getting initial sales, refining the product offering and developing marketing material, packaging and web presence for the product.  Together we have brought BoneView to thousands of happy hunters all over the country.

What do your customers say about your products?

 Our customers are our best sales people.  We get phone calls and emails from people each day thanking us for a convenient, useful and value priced product.  It’s really motivating to hear that we are making a difference in the way people hunt and the gear that they carry with them.  In addition, our customers have done a great job of spreading the word on our products and the vast majority of our sales come from friend and family referrals. Hunters in general like to have the latest new products and gear and they especially like to show it off at deer camp! 

What are your most popular products and who is your target audience?

 The BoneView device for IPhone and Android are very popular. Our target audience is any hunter with a trail camera and a smartphone – plain and simple.

What do you enjoy most about what you do?

 Steve and I are both outdoorsmen at heart.  We love being able to work in an industry that we are passionate about and we love connecting with our customers who share the same passion.

What is your favorite hunting or fishing memory?

My favorite hunting memory came from our same family farm in Strum WI that I talked about earlier.  It was the second day of gun season and I was in my tower stand.  My dad was positioned in a tree stand on the opposite side of our farm, maybe 500 yards to the east of me.  There is a large ridge that runs east/west on our farm and we were each hunting opposites ends of that ridge.  At lunch, my plan was to walk the ridge all the way to my dad’s stand and then we would go back to the farmhouse together to get lunch and watch a bit of the Packer game.  I had only walked 50 yards down the ridge when I came across a blood trail in the snow.  It was obvious a deer had been shot either earlier that morning or the day before on a neighboring property and then come onto our farm.  I used my walkie-talkie (this was before cell phones) to tell my dad that I was on a blood trail and to watch for any wounded deer coming his way.  I walked about another hundred yards before hearing my dad’s gun fire.  He radioed me the words “come quick” and the excitement in his voice was overwhelming! I ran the rest of the ridge and arrived at my dads stand.  He was only 15 feet away from his stand and was kneeling next to what is still the largest deer he has ever shot, a perfect 10 point measuring 163″.  We hugged each other and spent some time re-living the hunt.  It was great to see the happiness and excitement in my old man.  The deer had been wounded by a hunter the day before in the front leg and I am glad we had the opportunity to humanely harvest it before the coyotes did.  In addition, we still give my dad a hard time about only being able to shoot big deer if they are on three legs!

How did you start the company?

I started the company with Fix It Sticks after becoming frustrated with the most ubiquitous tool in cycling. I sketched what I wanted, got it made by a machinist up the street and then little by little, day by day learned more about how to launch a product on Kickstarter, which I eventually did. Fix It Sticks was near disaster many times, but you chip away at it and get better. Then I quit my day job working for FedEx and really focused on getting sales. That went on for 2 years, then last year I launched another cycling specific product, the BackBottle and this year I launched The Weatherneck which has much wider appeal outside of cycling.

What do your customers say about your products?

 My customer reviews from Fix It Sticks were always outstanding. No BS, people love those tools cause they work. We made them right here in Appleton for a long time. Now we’ve expanded and even added a shooting/hunting version of Fix It Sticks for torqueing down scopes and general gunsmithing. That’s a new market for us but it is being very well received by the hunting and tactical markets.

 

What are your most popular products and who is your target audience?

 My products each develop their own brand when they launch, so far we have 3. Fix It Sticks have sold all over the world and continue to grow. The Weatherneck is brand new, but generating a lot of interest outside cycling and I love that. I want to learn more about other sports. I took some bow lessons this fall and learned a ton. Every time I learn a new sport I get ideas, so the best use of my time is to learn new sports. It just so happens I love doing that anyway. But my passion will always be cycling.

What do you enjoy most about what you do?

 I love riding my bikes and thinking about what things I am using that could be made better. This is common with entrepreneurs/inventors. People ask how I come up with new ideas and that is very easy to answer. I go do stuff and get annoyed with my gear. It happens almost daily. So new ideas are not in short supply. Just that some of those ideas are completely terrible, some are hacks and not products and some just don’t work. But once in awhile I can turn a frustration into an innovation and sell it to other people who are also annoyed with whatever bothered me in the first place.

What is your favorite hunting or fishing memory?

Favorite hunting storymy dad took me pheasant hunting in SD a few times and the drive out there was always the best. Just being one of the guys and hearing adult conversations for 16 hours was very informative. I was a decent shooter when the opportunity arose so that was fun. But the dogsI think watching our dog work the field and retrieve like she was born to do was the most intense memory. That was magic.

Quality, value and durability are aspects that I look at when making a decision on new hunting product purchases.  Having a young family, I need to be smart about my purchases.  A quite a few years ago I picked up a pair of Vortex Diamondback 10×42 Binoculars.  These binoculars met my standards in quality, value and durability.  I have put these binoculars through years of use hunting deer, turkeys, bear and elk.

This past fall, while scanning the woods with my binoculars, something didn’t seem quite right.  I was not able to see anything through the right eyepiece.  After looking them over, I noticed that there was a loose piece inside.  Now, I was fully aware of the Vortex VIP Warranty, but never I never had to use it and didn’t know anyone personally who had.  I really wasn’t sure what to expect.  I went online and printed out the service form.  After filling out the form, I packed up the binoculars and sent them off to Vortex.  Within a few days I received an email stating that they had received my binoculars and gave an estimated turnaround time.

I was very surprised when within 2 weeks I received another email letting me know that I had a package coming from Vortex.  I was surprised because I sent my binoculars in around the holidays and know that many people take vacation around this time which can increase turnaround time.  I received the package the next day and couldn’t wait to see my repaired binoculars.  A note was listed on the packing list that they were unable to repair my binoculars.  Since the binoculars were not repairable I received brand new Diamondback 10×42 binoculars!  I was blown away with the outstanding customer service!  I can definitely say that Vortex stood by their VIP (Very Important Promise) Warranty!
