How did you start the company?

In 2011, we recognized that there was a significant price gap between entry-level and high-end coolers.  We started Brute Outdoors in July of 2011 in an effort to bridge this gap and offer an affordable, American-made alternative.  By 2012, we had rolled out a cooler line that included 5 sizes all made right here in America.

What do your customers say about your products?

Through our social media, online forums and direct communication with customers, they’re always offering up feedback.  Our initial cooler designs changed from 2011 to 2012 and most of that was driven by Customer feedback.  We listened wholeheartedly and incorporated their feedback into our designs.  The thing we hear most often from people is how happy they are that our coolers are Made in USA.  We didn’t want to copy the competition by offering a similar product.  We wanted to offer more.  Bison Coolers include extra features (e.g., custom lid graphics, dual drain plugs, built-in ruler, true-to-size capacity, etc.) at a more affordable price point providing the best value cooler on the market.

What are your most popular products?

Our most popular products are our 50 Quart Bison Cooler as well as our new SoftPak line which is a huge improvement over traditional soft personal coolers.  We often describe the SoftPaks as “this ain’t your mama’s soft cooler” because it’s tear resistant to 375 pounds, includes molle webbing for adding accessories as well a nearly an inch of insulation allowing for 24 hours of ice retention in 120 degree heat.

Who is your target audience?

Our target audience are male and female outdoor enthusiasts who enjoying hunting, fishing, camping and tailgating.  Bison Coolers diverse offerings of sizes, colors and accessories is applicable to so many uses that our audience is extremely broad.

What do you enjoy most about what you do?

The most rewarding part of my job is seeing people putting their Bison Coolers gear to good use.  Whether it’s through pictures on social media, coolers in the back of pickups, people wearing hats or rocking stickers on the back of their pickups… it’s extremely rewarding to see the brand loyalty that people have and their support for us.  We’re a small shop and we bust our backs to provide the best cooler on the market and it’s very rewarding to see so many people appreciate our American-made products.

What is your favorite hunting or fishing memory?

My favorite outdoors memory is taking my 3 year old daughter fishing for the first time.  It’s on us to ensure that hunting, fishing and camping traditions continue with the next generation and it’s so exciting to see my daughter enjoy it so much and develop that passion at such a young age.

Comments from Wisconsin Outdoor Pursuits:

I would like to thank Jeremy Denson, co-owner of Bison Coolers (formerly Brute Outdoors), for taking the time to share some great information about their company!  Anyone that is active outdoors knows the importance of a good quality cooler and that is what Bison Coolers provides!  I have been in the market for a soft cooler for my kayak fishing and other outdoor adventures.  I’m pretty sure the Bison SoftPak will be just the ticket!  Be sure to check out all of the great accessories for the Bison Coolers as well (like the camo cushion pictured above)!  Like Jeremy said, “It’s on us to ensure that hunting, fishing and camping traditions continue with the next generation.”  With two young kids myself, I could not have said this any better!  Take some time to share your passion for the outdoors with our younger generations!

How did you start the company?

CamLockBox started out as a hobby that got out of control.  I bought a laser for cutting steel and wasn’t sure what I was going to do with it.  I knew of game cameras and the boxes that were available for locking them up and I knew I could improve greatly on what was available.  I started working out of my garage on the boxes with spare time while working full time at Fox Valley Metal Tech.  After roughly four years, the boxes got so out of control I decided to work on them full time instead.  We now work out of two buildings, stock around 60 different trail cameras, and have security boxes for several hundred camera models (among MANY other items).

How long have you been in business?

We’ve been manufacturing our security boxes for around 10 years, I’m not completely sure since it started out so slow.

Moultrie M-550 M880i M990i Gen2 Security Box-1

Who is your target audience?

We’re after anyone who loves to hunt or fish!  We’re best known for our cameras and security boxes but we’re also just getting into stocking common fishing accessories.  We also come across a lot of customers calling from government agencies like the DNR and US boarder patrol.

What do you enjoy most about what you do?

I like building relationships with all types of customers.  We get a lot of repeat customers and I think that’s because we take the time to talk to them and figure out with them what is the best trail camera for them or the best way to secure the cameras they already have.  I also really like to see pictures that customers send to us…we get photos of things they didn’t even know existed!Blade_X_5_MP_Security_Box_1__17712_1409809691_1280_1280

What are your most popular products?

Our most popular products are definitely our security/bear boxes.  All of them are designed by us and 100% made here in Green Bay, Wisconsin.  We also sell a ton of Master Lock products (python cables and padlocks) and our top selling cameras are made by Moultrie.

What is your favorite hunting or fishing memory?

I don’t have one specific hunting or fishing memory but I can say I’m proud of the number of quality deer I’ve harvested over the years.

Comments from Wisconsin Outdoor Pursuits:

Having a camera batted around and chewed on a few times by a bear last fall, A CAMLOCKbox would have been very helpful!  Along with protecting your camera from unwanted animals, it also provides a great way of locking your camera to the tree.  Not all cameras are set up the best for locking them to a tree.  Hunting public land here in Wisconsin, the need to lock my camera is evident!  The CAMLOCKbox provides a great way to do that!  I will definitely be looking at picking up a box myself to be able to better lock and mount my trail camera this year!  I encourage you to do the same!

Why do you hunt?  Hunting has been around as long as humans have!  This tradition has stemmed from our necessity to provide food for our families.  I started thinking about this question this past weekend while I was out turkey hunting.  It was a tough weekend and the Toms were not very responsive.  However, some of the other experiences I encountered on this hunt gave me the inspiration to share with you why I hunt and get you thinking about why you hunt!

DSC_0019

When answering the question “Why do you hunt”, I need to start by saying, to me hunting is not always about the kill!   Sure, a kill is the end goal, but the drive behind why I hunt is much more!  For starters, a big reason why I hunt is the experience.  Everything from the preparation to the processing of the animal.  I truly enjoy learning about the animal I am trying to harvest and what it takes to be successful.  Harvesting an animal is no easy task.  We are entering their environment where they are familiar with their surroundings.  I love watching and learning why an animal acts a particular way.  I love learning from my past experiences to make myself a better hunter.

Another big reason that I hunt is for all of the unique sights and sounds we experience while in the woods.  This may be something unique that the animal I am pursuing does or it could be seeing an animal that I don’t normally see.  Last year, I pictured a black bear in the area where I deer hunt.  Even though I had heard other people talk about bears in the area, I had never had any experiences with them myself.  I had the pleasure of watching a fisher sneak past my treestand this past archery season.  This spring I was able to watch a Tom turkey court and mount a hen out in the field, a sight I had never been able to experience before.  My dad and I also spotted a hen sitting on her nest down in a ditch as we walked back to the truck for lunch.  You never know what you will see or experience while out hunting!

DSC_0008

Last and maybe the biggest reason I hunt is sharing these experiences with family and friends!  I grew up following my dad into the woods on many adventures.  From sitting with my dad before I was able to hunt myself to hunting spring turkeys with him to this day, to me these experiences are what it is all about.  Memories like my dad calling in my first turkey and seeing him shaking more than I was as the turkey got closer!  To now, as I have shared before, taking my children hunting and sharing the outdoors with them!  I look forward to turkey hunting every spring because I know that it usually means a day or two of walking in the woods with my dad!  While I will always cherish the hunts with my dad the most, I also have great memories of hunting small game with my friends growing up!  From jumping on brush piles chasing rabbits, to searching the trees for squirrels!  In more recent years, I have been able to share hunting adventures with new friends and my wife’s family.  These are all experiences that truly make hunting what it is for me!

So as you are finishing reading this, think about “Why do you hunt.”  What is it that keeps giving you that itch to get in the woods?  I am sure that for many of you, like me, it is not all about the kill.  I would love to hear from you about why you hunt and what keeps bringing you back!  Send me an email or comment below!  Let’s share our passion for the outdoors!

How did you start the company?

My name is Richard Powers III. I was raised hunting and come from an area where everyone hunts, its what we do. So I piddled around making calls in my free time. Then I went to college where I got my B.S. in Biotechnology and my M.S. in biotechnology. During that process I had to take some business courses. In one of those courses I had to make up a mock business plan for a fictitious business, so naturally I instantly thought of the calls that I made in my free time. So through that process I was entered into a business competition much like Shark Tank on television where I had to present a business proposal and try to bring on investors. In that competition I took first place and was a finalist in another competition where I was offered investment and shop space to start Triple Toe. At the time I declined and wanted to grow organically without any partners. Now we are going into our 5th year of business. We have had sales in 43 states. We are in over 100 stores in Canada as well as numerous stores across the United States. Things have grown much more quickly than we had planned but one thing remained the same after all the expansion, we still make every call in hand in our shop and we make sure they are all up to our standards before leaving the Triple Toe Shop. We now have started a waterfowl guide business in the State of New York, smack dab in the middle of wine country on some of the best waterfowl hunting in the country, right on the finger lakes. The finger lakes are the major flyway for the east coast and is such a beautiful place to be as well as hunt. So as of lately we are moving some of our manufacturing to New York and keeping some things here in my home town of Lock Haven in Central Pennsylvania.

What do you enjoy most about what you do?

Through this whole process my favorite part of it all is that I am one of the youngest if not the youngest CEO of an international company. I am about to turn 26 in June. At first it was hard to gain respect but over the time I have been expanding it didnt take long for people to not only treat me with respect but to realize the kind of person I am. I dont play games, I treat everyone with respect and above all I want people to enjoy hunting and the outdoors and teach the ways of the woods and water to their kids.

Everyone says that it must be so great working in the outdoors for a living. Those people obviously never ran their own business. It is the most stressful thing I have ever had to do. That being said, it was the best and most rewarding decision I have ever made. I absolutely LOVE what I do every single day. I love developing new products and guiding hunts, seeing someone quack or honk or yelp on a call or ever shoot their first duck or goose or see their first turkey strutting in front of them. Seeing that whole process unfold and bringing that much excitement and joy to someone make my profession the best thing I could be doing.

What are your most popular products?

We currently have 32 products, which grows each season. Our best selling turkey call is our rendezvous friction call, it is the only call on the market we have found that works wet and even submerged, AND you can use it wet with a wooden striker. Our rabbit squealer is our best selling predator call due to its versatility, having the capability of being a fawn bawler or a rabbit in distress as well as it being made out of our newest material that is indestructible, you can literally run it over with your truck. But above all our fastest growing department has by far been waterfowl. We have developed a new tone board and reed system in both our duck and goose call lines that are with out a doubt the easiest blowing calls on the market and they are beyond life like. We have started using new materials and have so much R&D within the last few years in waterfowl that we are having a difficult time keeping them in stock. So in my opinion I would say our newest and most exciting department would be our duck and goose calls. Our Tempest goose call is our best selling goose call and our APEX duck call are our best sellers this year in those departments.

 Who is your target audience?

Our target audience I would say varies depending on the division of hunting. Our predator hunters tend to be a younger generation for the most part. Our turkey calls tend to be more of a age group between 35-65 so middle to older aged. Then finally our waterfowl, we have had increased sales of every age group from about 18-65 in our waterfowl sales this year. It has been a really great year for our waterfowl calls. We are very proud of them and where we have come and where we will be 5 years from now.

What is your favorite hunting or fishing memory?

I was asked What is my favorite hunting story, well to me that is kind of a hard question. I have had some great days with friends and family in the woods and water. But family is everything to us at Triple Toe and I would have to say that hunting with my Father Richard Powers II and doubling up on some long beards on opening day when I was 12 has to take the cake. You cant explain what it is like to accomplish a fun and successful day of hunting with the people that you love most in life. So my words of wisdom, hunt with your friends and family as much as possible because you never know how long you have and I never heard of having a bad day in the woods or on the water.
