Growing up my dad and I would always talk about making a trip “out West” to hunt elk.  My dad would share stories about previous hunts he had been on and with each story my excitement and desire to hunt the Western states was growing!  Although it wasn’t an actual hunting story, my dads mule riding experience on one of his trips is by far my favorite and has me almost crying every time I think about it!

The group was starting to come down off the mountain for the evening.  The mule my dad was riding was stubborn to say the least.  On the way down the mountain something must have happened and the mule took off on a dead run down the mountain.  My dad, weapon in one hand and holding on for dear life with the other, his hand ending up behind him bouncing down the mountain on this mule.  The terrain would level out for a bit and he could regain his position, but would bounce forward again as the mule headed down the next decline.  Finally reaching the bottom and able to get the mule to come to a stop, he was able to get off and proceeded to give that mule a swift kick in the hind end!

Stories like this one and the desire to create our own stories led my dad and I to start planning a trip to hunt out West for elk.  We finally started getting serious about our planning in January of 2010 and decided on hunting the fall of 2011.  I begin searching the internet and doing research on different areas and outfitters.  We decided to concentrate on a self-guided hunt to help keep the cost down.  I contacted various outfitters and after discussing with my dad we settled on Hill’s Guide Service out of Collbran, Colorado.

Hill’s Guide Service is an outfitter that has been in business for many years, that experience is one of the leading factors that led us to choose to hunt with them.  Before booking, we were provided with references we could call.  I talked to a couple of the references and they were very honest about the land and the outfitter.  After booking, we were provided with a list of gear that may be helpful on our hunt.  Since we booked almost a year and a half early, the outfitter kept us updated on the hunts that fall.  As the time neared for our hunt, the outfitter provided us with helpful directions, a motel recommendation since we were arriving a day early and various other tips.

Our hunt was set up for the first week of the 2011 Colorado archery elk season in Unit 421.  We arrived in Colorado the Thursday before they season opened and decided to make a stop at the Cabela’s store in Grand Junction to pick up our license and any last minute supplies.  The outfitter had a trout stream running right past his personal home and offered to let us do a little fishing so we both picked up a 1 day fishing license as well. DSC_0090 We made our way to the motel to get checked in and meet up with our outfitter in the small town of Collbran.  After getting checked into the motel, our outfitter met up with us and took us back to his home to do a little trout fishing with our fly rods!  We ended up catching two trout that we would later cook on the grill at camp!

Our outfitter met us at the motel Friday morning and we headed out to camp.  The outfitters camp is located on 200 acres of private land that connects to the Grand Mesa National Forest.  There is one larger base camp cabin and three other cabins of various sizes located throughout the property.  Being able to have the comfort of a cabin, yet be able to walk out the door and start hunting was amazing!  We would be staying in one of the three other cabins.  We got all of our gear unpacked and shot our bows to make sure everything was all set for the next morning!  Now as I mentioned before, this was set up as an unguided hunt.  However the outfitter said that he would go out with us the first morning to give us a little better knowledge of the area we would be hunting.  This was completely unexpected since we signed up and paid for an unguided hunt!  Just another example of the great service that was provided!

How did you start the company?

I started the company because the weapons industry was really missing a key and vital component when it comes to protection. I have a number of friends and family in the military and law enforcement and always heard of continued issues with the products they had access to for protecting their guns.  After listening to the issues everyone was having with their weapons, I found myself researching better ways to supply the military and law enforcement with the best solution to their problems.  I reached out to friends in the lubricant and chemical industries and created a revolutionary innovative product that has never been used in the weapons industry.  Once we field tested with military, law enforcement, hunters and sharpshooters for 7 months and the feedback and reviews were amazing, Wolf Premium Oils was born.  I figured that if we had the seal of apporval of soldiers and cops that depend on their weapons to perform on demand, that we had really found the right product to change the industry.

How long have you been in business?

I began working on testing and formulas for the All-In-One Gun Oil & Cleaner in December 2013.  We field tested for 7 months and went public to dealers and distrubutors in July 2013.

What do you enjoy most about what you do?

I really find myself enjoying seeing my products changing an industry.  I enjoy hearing from our customers everyday about how our products are restoring their weapon back to its original state when they first bought it.  I understand that there are so many options for customers to choose from in the cleaning and lubricant space, so I truly appreciate and value the fact that they trusted Wolf Premium Oils to protect their weapons.  It is a surreal feeling to turn on the television and see your company being used by television personalities or reading a magazine that took the time to post a review and recommend us to their readers.  It is an incredible blessing that I don’t take for granted.

What are your most popular products?

Our initial offering to the public was the All-In-One Gun Oil & Cleaner.  That product from the minute we opened the doors really took off like a rocket ship.  We were gaining alot of traction on social media, blogs and in magazines within our first month.  I knew after testing that we had a premium product at a low price point, so the excitement was huge on our end.  I was aware of the requests for other options for our outdoor market dealers, so I created an Archery Oil and Fishing Reel Oil to round out that space.  We did in-depth testing on the Archery Oil and Fishing Reel oil for 9 months to make sure we could really be listed as a premium product in these areas.  Those products are quickly becoming just as popular for us, especially the Fishing Reel Oil which is getting worldwide attention.

Who is your target audience?

The products we offer reach across a number of audiences.  The All-In-One Gun Oil & Cleaner is quickly gaining attention as the must have accessory in the weapons industry.  Our customers in the outdoor industry are using our All-In-One Gun Oil & Cleaner on their guns for waterfowl, turkey and rifle hunting.  Our products repel moisture and won’t allow corrosion on your gun and that is a game changer in that market.  The Archery Oil is mostly outdoor and competitive archers industries.  The Archery Oil is used on all parts of the bow and also will replace the bow wax and extend the life and ease the pull of your string.  The Fishing Reel Oil is being picked up by fishermen worldwide as our product will repel moisture and corrosion in fresh and saltwater conditions.  Whether it is a regular reel or a commercial fishing reel being used on charters, our products continue to impress.

What is your favorite hunting or fishing memory?

I have really fond memories of hunting and fishing with my Dad growing up.  I was more interested in hunting when I was younger because I was a little too active and loud for fishing.  Looking back on duck hunting and goose hunting with my Dad and his friends, it really taught me about bonding with my friends and the importance of maintaining those relationships.  My favorite hunting memory was shooting my first duck and thinking it was really the coolest thing ever.  The fishing memory was fishing with my parents on the St. Johns River in Florida.  I was not a quiet kid at the time and found my amusement by throwing food in the water, not knowing that a crocodile was eating what I was tossing overboard.  After it banged into the side of our boat, my parents didn’t share the amusement that I did, but it was cool to witness up close.

How did you start the company?

The company started because we wanted to continue to help fellow hunters.  We initially came up with the idea for the product several years ago and have since used various prototypes on every harvest. However, in the last 18 months after multiple meetings which gradually became more formal, the idea to bring the product to market and share it with other hunters was realized. Eventually we came up with the name Game Pegs and over the last 12 months have been working effortlessly with various manufacturers to get the finished product down to a price that we hope will make it accessible for all hunters. Now with a completed, manufacturing ready, product we decided that the best way to get the tool out to the most hunters by the 2015 deer season would be through a kickstarter campaign. For any of your readers who are not familiar with kickstarter I encourage them to go and check out https://www.kickstarter.com/hello?ref=footer This platform is a great way for smaller start-up companies like ourselves to get innovative products out to the hunting world without all the red tape of going through a major distributor/retailer. We plan to launch the campaign on April 20th (to coincide with the start of Turkey season in Canada) with door crasher specials for the first customers.

How long have you been in business?

Game Pegs has been in development for approximately 3 years but we have really only been working on our branding through our association with thehuntblog.com for the last 12 months. Furthermore the vision for our future development is continuing to be shaped through our parent company, Upper Canada Hunting. UCH was established just this year, and is very excited to be working toward bringing a number of products to retail stores in the next couple years.  We cannot talk about them at this time, as they are still in their early stages, but we can assure you, they will make your life in the woods considerably better.

What do you enjoy most about what you do?

What we enjoy most about this is knowing that the time we spend in the woods is going to help make a difference for other hunters.  Every time set foot in the woods there is opportunity for research and development.  Every accessory we develop is intended to help us become more successful hunters, and we enjoy sharing our research, knowledge and expertise with the hunting community.  As previously mentioned we are working on our branding and development through our association with The Hunt Blog, and our mission remains the same, ‘to preserve the traditions of our past for future generations of hunters’.

What are your most popular products?

Game Pegs is the premiere product but keep a close eye at thehuntblog.com and gamepegs.com for all of our upcoming innovations.

Who is your target audience?

Our targeted audience with this product is deer hunters across North America of all experience levels. Game Pegs is a field dressing aid which allows hunters to make precise cuts safely, and effortlessly. This product is going to revolutionize how you process your deer in the field. You can view a short demo on youtube at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gXzN3pWkZqg or at thehuntblog.com/video  While our target audience is white tail hunters, we also have our manufacturer ready with our “Big Game Pegs” which will help field dress and quarter larger animals such as moose and elk coming fall 2016.

What is your favorite hunting or fishing memory?

Our favorite memory has to be the first time we harvested a deer together.  For two of the three of us, this was our first harvest, and for all three of us, it was our first harvest together.  It was a day of firsts, and those are few and far between these days. The track wasnt particularly difficult or memorable, but the effort and skill required to harvest a deer made an impression on us. We enjoyed working through the different cuts of meat, safely preparing it for storage, and getting it to the table. Of course this involved the best part, enjoying some fresh venison!
